How To Pick Green Peppers

Gender Specific Green Peppers? Um...why? Those were my first questions when I saw this picture on Pinterest today. So, I looked into it a little bit more by going here.

I put this to the test today as I made Philly cheese steak sandwiches for dinner. Basically, the theory is that the peppers with three bumps are males (which have less seeds) and the peppers with 4 are female (and, have more feeds). My female green pepper may have been a little more gender neutral than what I should've aimed for considering the test I was conducting, but it still worked for the most part.

You can see below that there are definitely more seeds in the female green pepper vs. the male green pepper. We also got a significant amount more of the vegetable from the male green pepper.

Just for cuteness sake, I have to tell you - my son was so excited about the top of the green peppers, he kept putting it back on and saying "hat!!" Just adorable.

Anyway, you get the point. Next time you are shopping for green peppers, make sure you get the peppers with the 3 bumps and not the 4. You'll get more bang for your buck and won't have to deal with more seeds, or crazy green pepper girl hormones. (Where's my rimshot when I need it?)

  1. This is not true. There is no such thing as a female and male green pepper. Peppers have male and female organs in the same flower and once fertilized, they form a fruit (technically the ovary, which houses the seeds. The difference between 3 and 4 lobed peppers is how they grow and has nothing to do with being male or female. 4 lobed peppers are almost always larger and therefore can house more seeds. Similar to how a large cucumber has more seeds than a smaller one.

  2. Agreed, this is ridiculous. There are no female or male peppers. Don't believe everything on the net, research it folks!

  3. I was recently asked to make a run to the grocery store to pick up a few items for my wife. I was excited to see that Green peppers were on the list of items she needed to prepare her Sweat and sour Meatballs. I selected two peppers, one with 4 knuckles, and the other with 3 knuckles on the bottom. When I delivered the items from the list, I casually noted that I had purchased a Male and a Female pepper because she had failed to specify the gender. She of course gave me the “are you crazy look.” I told her that there was a difference. She was less then receptive to this newly shared insight, so I advised her let me know what she sees when she prepares the peppers. Hours later when it came time to prepare the peppers, she became a believer. “Viva la difference”

Do some research, and don't believe everything that you read on the internet. Abraham Lincoln taught us that. ;)

Seriously, if something contradicts your prior knowledge, cross reference it. That means you have to verify the new information is, IN FACT, correct. This is not meant as an afront to Heidi.

  5. If there is any difference it is culinary, not biological. Larger peppers (four lobes) would have more seeds. Period. If you know how to cut a pepper properly, the number of seeds isn't an issue.

  6. The Male Pepper simply tastes better. The size of the male pepper can be much larger than its female counterpart. Its odor is not as strong and is much less messy than the female. For the most part, it is better at math and driving too.

  7. It would be more sense if someone says four-bump peppers have more seeds than three-bump ones rather calling them "male" or "female". It sounds ridiculous and sexism. Is it because females has "more seeds"? Female human has about 400,000 eggs in her lifetime and male human has how many sperms in his lifetime...? 500 Billions. Lol. Interesting, though.

  8. Why is this blog post still up since what it's talking about is not true at all?

  9. I am friends with a pepper farmer and he says that it is not true! He has been growing peppers for many, many years and his father and grandfather before him and he has NEVER heard of any such thing. Don't believe everything you see on the internet.
